When you fly into the North Coast of California area, you'll most likely land at the Arcata/Eureka Airport, just north of Arcata and Eureka. The 745-acre airport was built as a site to test aircraft defogging systems, for the United States Navy, during World War II. The airport supported the Naval Air Station Alameda and was the 12th Naval District's headquarters.
In 1947, a DC-3 for Southwest Airlines used the Ground-Controlling Approach radar and Instrument Landing System, for the first time in the world, to land the aircraft. As the largest airport between Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, it services general aviation, commercial flights and cargo shipments. The commercial airline offers service to Sacramento, Crescent City and San Francisco.
