Make time for plenty of fun in the City of Angels. Visit one of the city's popular attractions, the Griffith Observatory, for a great day of science and space exploration. This wonderful observatory located on the south side of Mount Hollywood, has been a Los Angeles landmark since it was dedicated in 1935. It was built from the vision of Griffith Jenkins Griffith, on the site of Griffith Park, established in 1896. Throughout the years, the observatory has become a well-known leader in public astronomy and remains one of the world's premier public observatories. The observatory and the surrounding park are a popular community gathering place.
Enjoy the view through the observatory's original 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope and take your time through the Hall of the Eye exhibit. Visit as often as you like, since admission to the Observatory and the grounds are free. Parking is free too. Be sure to view the shows at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, for a nominal fee.
To avoid city traffic on the weekends, make your way to the Vermont/Sunset Metro Red Line Station and ride the DASH Weekend Observatory Shuttle to the observatory. The shuttle rides are offered all day long. The Griffith Observatory is operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation for the City of Los Angeles. Stay close to the observatory and the variety of Los Angeles attractions, as a guest of one of the local Best Western hotels.
