Meadows Field
Meadows Field, located north of Bakersfield, encompasses 1,357 acres in Kern County. The airport was built in 1926 and named Kern County Airport No. 1. By 1946, the airport was used as an Army Air Forces Night Fighter School, by the United States Army Air Forces. This training airfield was also used by the 427th Night Fighter Squadron in 1944. After the conclusion of the war, the airport was renovated with a new terminal and commercial flights commenced.
The William M. Thomas terminal boasts of shopping, dining, rental car agencies and a scaled model of Spaceship One. Passengers choose either United Continental or US Airways for commercial flights to Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco or Phoenix Those interested in general aviation have access to three fixed based operators that provide service for fuel, aircraft maintenance, hangars and chartered flights.
