Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial
Plan your next visit to California and head for the Bay Area. The Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial is dedicated to the 320 sailors and civilians who lost their lives in the 1944 Port Chicago Disaster, which was a massive munitions explosion during World War II.
Today, the memorial recognizes the historical significance of the event, which led to the largest mutiny in naval history. Because most of the dead were segregated African American sailors working in dangerous conditions, the explosion also led to successful desegregation efforts in the navy. Drive in from nearby Concord and enjoy a tour.
