Winchester Mystery House & Historic Trails

Days Trips in the Bay Area

The Bay Area is home to many attractions – the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the rest of San Francisco – but many must-sees lie just beyond the City. Pack up the car or grab a shuttle seat to San Jose and take a guided tour of the Winchester Mystery House.

The Winchester Mystery House – said to be haunted – is currently four stories high, and houses 160 rooms, 47 fireplaces, and 10,000 windows. Both Mansion and Behind the Scenes tours are offered, as well as Garden Tours, Flashlight Tours and even Fright Nights. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes – mansion tours can be over a mile of walking.

Since you’ve got the car all packed, travel down a segment of the famed Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail just south of the Bay Area. Had enough driving? Stretch your legs at Alum Rocks Park – home to hiking trails, bike paths and horseback adventure.

Don’t worry about making it back to the city just yet. Check into one of two Best Western hotels in San Jose, or pull over in Sunnyvale, San Mateo or Redwood City.
