Visiting San Francisco Bay Area

Spring in the San Francisco Bay area brings the beginning of festival season and anticipation of outdoor fun. Take a flight into Oakland International Airport or travel by car for March’s Oakland Running Festival featuring the 2013 Oakland Marathon. Visit Oakland Coliseum spring or summer for an Oakland A’s baseball game. A flight into South San Francisco and San Francisco International Airport let’s you choose travel south to Santa Cruz County and ideal spring beach weather and fun, or a trip into San Francisco for events like the 8th Annual Ghirardelli Square Wine Festival or the San Francisco International Beer Festival.

Birders find a stop in Milpitas at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory for a wealth of information on local bird populations, habitats and ecosystems. Staff can direct visitors to prime locations in the Bay Area to view spring bird migrations and nesting areas. Join biologist Alvaro Jaramillo at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory for workshops; March session’s highlight Sparrows, and Migrant Landbirds are featured in April and May workshops.

For a treat, travel to Fairfield, 50-miles northeast of San Francisco on Interstate 80, for a visit to the Jelly Belly Factory. Get your degree in Beanology at the Jelly Belly University, take the popular factory tour, and shop the Jelly Belly Candy Store for your favorite merchandise. Take your time and enjoy lunch at the Jelly Belly Café. Visit weekends and holidays for the factory tours.

Spring marks the end of the 2013 season for the San Jose State University Spartan basketball at the SJSU Event Center, while baseball ramps up at Blethan Field and Municipal Stadium. The Spartans share Municipal Stadium with minor league baseball’s San Jose Giants. Opening day for the Giants 2013 home season is Thursday April 11th.

Begin your spring and summer outdoor summer fun at the 2013 Santa Cruz Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k. Events are April 7th on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The start is at the corner of Beach Street and Main Street with courses offering runners and walkers scenic views of Santa Cruz’s Pacific coastline. The city of Aptos, 8-miles east of Santa Cruz, hosts the 4th Annual Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival, April 13th and 14th. Celebrate the premier mountain bike facilities, trails and courses of Santa Cruz County.
