Stanford Shines in Football and Baseball
One of the most important research universities on the west coast, Stanford University is set in the San Jose region of California. Adjacent to the city of Palo Alto, Stanford was established in 1891 by former California Governor, Leland Stanford. A private university, Stanford features a campus over 8100 acres in size, and offers a host of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Athletically, Stanford fields 34 different varsity level sports teams as a member of the Pac-12 Conference. The Stanford Cardinal have a storied history, with men’s teams totalling 61 national championship trophies in all sports, while the women’s sports have totaled 41 – men’s and women’s tennis have accounted for 33 of those.
During the fall, waves of college football fans travel from all around the area – from as far south as Salinas, to neighbor cities like Mountain View, and Sunnyvale – for all the intense action of Stanford football. Make your way to Stanford Stadium and watch as the Cardinal battle the rest of the Pac-12 in hopes of landing a BCS bowl invitation.
Stanford baseball fans visiting the area from cities like Watsonville, or Gilroy head to Sunken Diamond, the home field of the Stanford Cardinal baseball team. Likewise, fans of the Stanford Cardinal softball team visit to the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium – check them out during the spring.
The Stanford Cardinal basketball team saw success during the 2000s. Traveling in from Fremont during the winter months? Looking for some exciting, slamma jamma action of college basketball? Make your way to Maples Pavilion, home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
