San Diego State Pushes Ahead in Athletics

Set just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego, San Diego State University welcomes its student body, and visitors from all around the state. A public university, SDSU was established in 1897, and today offers degrees in over 150 fields of study.
Widely known as a research university, SDSU fields 17 varsity sports teams. The SDSU Aztecs compete in the Mountain West Conference. Visitors from all the over the San Diego metro area make plans throughout the year to watch the Aztecs compete in sports like basketball, football, women’s volleyball, and baseball.
During the fall, visitors from as far north as Oceanside, to as far south as Chula Vista make the drive into the heart of San Diego for all the hard-hitting action of SDSU football. Make your way to Qualcomm Stadium, and join over 70,000 screaming Aztec fans as they cheer on their team in the fierce competition that is the Mountain West Conference.
College baseball fans in the area, including cities like Poway, Escondido, and Encinitas, make their way to Tony Gynn Stadium for all the drag bunts, home runs and strikeouts of SDSU Aztec baseball. The stadium, completed in 1997, is named for legendary San Diego Padre, and local icon, Tony Gynn. SDSU Aztec softball play all their home games at the conveniently named SDSU Softball Stadium.
Having had national success during the 2000s, SDSU basketball continues to make its mark on the Mountain West Conference. Travel into San Diego from nearby cities like La Jolla and National City during the winter months and watch as both the men’s and women’s Aztec basketball teams fight for chance at their end-of-season tournaments.
