Visiting Central California Coast

A road trip along central California’s coastline is the quintessential summer adventure. With 350 miles of scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, dramatic coastlines and sandy beaches, traveling from Ventura County to Santa Clara Country is a spectacular journey. Take in a evening concert at Heritage Square in Oxnard, celebrate arts and music at Camarillo’s Old Town Musicfest, or enjoy the tradition of the 2013 Ventura County Fair. Airshow enthusiasts take note: September’s Point Mugu Air Show at Naval Base Ventura County has been cancelled. The September California International Airshow 2013 remains on the calendar as scheduled.

The California Rodeo Salinas is a summer tradition in the Golden State. Known as the largest professional rodeos in California, the 2013 California Rodeo Salinas takes place July 18th through 21st at the Salinas Sports Complex. Along with traditional rodeo events, visitors enjoy freestyle bullfights, industrial calf dressing and open ranch doctoring. Join family and friends July 13th for the Saturday Colmo del Rodeo Parade and Kiddie Kapers Parade, as well as the daily horse parades during the Rodeo Salinas.

Closer to the coastline in Monterey, summer travelers have a full season of events and festivals to enjoy. For music fans, June traditionally brings the Monterey Blues Festival, and although the festival filed for bankruptcy, rumors are Monterey may hear the blues in 2013. August on the Monterey Peninsula brings the 2013 Monterey Bay Reggaefest the 9th through 11th. In conjunction with the reggae festival, Saturday August 10th features Beer Fest at Reggaefest.

The Monterey Jazz Festival is an ideal end to summer. The 2013 Monterey Jazz Festival is September 20th to 22nd, and marks the 56th annual event. Held at the Monterey Fairgrounds, the 56th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival features headliners Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin and George Benson among others in a stellar lineup of performers. The 2013 MJF features 500 Artists on eight stages during three nights and two days of concerts.

Carmel, 5 miles southwest of Monterey on the Pacific coastline, is the place for music in July. The 2013 Carmel Beach Festival is July 13th through 27th at venues including Carmel Mission Basilica, Salinas High School, and Carmel Valley Ranch. While you’re there, enjoy a visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pebble Beach and the Carmel Valley for outstanding restaurants, shopping and sightseeing.
