Visiting California's Central Valley
The Central Valley of California includes the San Joaquin Valley, the Sacramento Valley, and large swaths of the most productive agricultural land in the Golden State. In the heart of the Great Central Valley life in communities like Lodi, Manteca and Stockton revolve around agriculture. Summer travelers enjoy events like Sip & Sketch in Lodi at the Acquiesce Winery and Grooving in the Grove concerts at Lodi’s Jessie Grove Winery.
Manteca celebrates the local harvest Tuesday nights at the Manteca Downtown Farmer’s Market from June through August. Delicato Vineyards in Manteca is a family owned winery offering tours and tastings through summer and fall. For baseball fans, Manteca’s Big League Dreams Sports Park features replica fields of America’s historic fields, plenty of games, along with a playground and restaurant.
Stockton launches into the summer season as host of the San Joaquin County Fair. From June 12th to June 16th visit the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds for concerts, horse racing, carnival and exhibits of the best of Stockton and San Joaquin County agriculture and livestock. A summer fair is a must for Central Valley travelers.
Calling itself the City of Water, Wealth, Contentment, & Health, Modesto is located inland east of the San Francisco Bay area in California’s Central Valley. Enjoy a traditional Fourth of July in Modesto at the city’s 139th Annual Fourth of July Celebration. Watch the parade through downtown Modesto with entries depicting the 2013 theme Proud to be an American. Join a day full of festivities following the parade at Graceada Park.
The Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield hosts a summer schedule of popular Central Valley events. The Kern County Market Place at the fairgrounds is open Tuesdays and weekends year round. The Kern County Hispanic Chamber launches summer fun with the 14th annual Latino Food Festival & Menudo Cook-off. And called the Best in the West, the 2013 Kern County Fair is September 18th through 29th at the Bakersfield fairgrounds.
Tehachapi, in the southern Central Valley, is home to the National Chavez Center, which honors the life and work of Cesar Chavez. Located 10-miles northwest of Tehachapi in the community of Keene, the National Chavez Center at La Paz is set on 187 scenic acres of the Tehachapi Mountains, easily accessed off Highway 58.
