Visiting Desert Region

Barstow, Needles, Blythe – pick an Interstate, head west and cross the state line into California’s desert region for summer fun and festivities. Visit destinations like Joshua Tree National Park, Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area or the Salton Sea. El Paseo in Palm Desert is the ideal spot for a shopping trip, along with your pick of wonderful restaurants. Join events like the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, the Idyllwild Jazz Festival, or take in a Dive-In Movie at Knott’s Soak City. Don’t just pass through the desert region of southern California, stop for day or two, and relax by a Best Western hotel pool and enjoy the area.

Film Buffs enjoy the Palm Springs 2012 International Short Film Festival, June 19th through June 25th. Known as Palm Springs ShortFest, the festival is a celebration of the art of short film making. Screenings include more than 300 films from over 50 countries, making for an exceptional selection of works. Films are shown at Camelot Theatres on Baristo Road in Palm Springs. Catch cutting edge shorts, participate in panel discussions and seminars, and network with film industry professionals at the Palm Springs International ShortFest.

Through July 29th, visitors to California’s desert region see the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition, Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, 1942 – 1964. Coachella Valley History Museum in Indio hosts the exhibit, which examines the experience of bracer workers and their families. Take a look back at US History for insight into today's current issues regarding guest worker programs.

Summer is hot in Palm Springs, ideal for a visit to Knott’s Soak City, Palm Springs. In addition to the water slides and attractions, summer brings Dive-In Movies to the water park. Enjoy an evening at Knott’s Soak City seated in the wave pool or on the beach watching a family movie. Check the schedule, twice a month Knott’s hosts the Dive-In Movies, and all the water attractions are open until the movie begins. Dive-in movies are great fun and make for a cool evening in California's desert region.

The Salton Sea, California’s largest lake, is located between the Palm Springs area and Brawley. Salton is better for birding than fishing, however summer brings kayaking, boating and waterskiing to the lake. There is plenty of room for water recreation on the Salton Sea’s 376 square miles. The lake is 30-miles south of Indio, a short drive from the comfort of Indio’s Best Western hotel.

When the dog days of August arrive, it’s time to head up the mountains for cooler weather. The 2012 Idyllwild Jazz Festival is August 25th and 26th. In the San Jacinto Mountains, enjoy the 19th Annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines featuring three stages with more than 25 artists and groups performing over the weekend. Browse over 50 booths showcasing works from selected artists; enjoy plenty of food and beverages from the Fine in the Pines food court; and relax and enjoy the music and cool mountain setting.
