Visiting the High Sierras

Stretching from South Lake Tahoe in the north, all the way south to the city of Lone Pine – nestled between Kings Canyon National Park and the Saline Valley – the High Sierras of California are a respite from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Visitors come to Sonora for convenient access to Angels Camp, Columbia State Historic Park, and the Tuolumne County Museum, but they stay for the boundless small-town charms throughout.

The 2015 Sonora Celtic Faire is March 6th through 8th, offering a unique way to get in touch with local personality. The event promises three days of nonstop entertainment, with live music, a variety of traditional dancing, street performers, archery, a fire-breathing dragon, and more.

The weather is warming up and the people of South Lake Tahoe are ready to get out on the water, but before the snow melts, head 45 minutes south of town to Kirkwood Mountain Resort and see the fast-paced, high-flying action of the 2015 The Rahlves’ Bonzai Tour. Held on March 7th and 8th, the event is a combination free-ski-meets-boarder cross race. Join spectators along the course or join the finish line party at the end of Snow Snake Gully.

Better start training – it’s almost time for the 2015 Wild Wild West Marathon and 50K in Lone Pine. Runners gather on Saturday, May 2nd and choose between the 50K, the 26.2-mile marathon, or a variety of shorter runs along scenic courses.

Nature lovers won’t want to miss the chance to bask in a bevy of blossoms in Ridgecrest, in the eastern Sierras. A colorful array of flowers began to bloom in Februay and will continue through April, when flower fanatics gather at the south end of Naval Air Warfare Center–China Lake for the 2015 Ridgecrest Flower Festival.

While you’re in the area, don’t forget to check out Randsburg, just south of Ridgecrest. The ghost of a once-booming mining town, Randsburg is a nearly untainted time capsule of bygone era. Check out the Randsburg Opera House, the White Horse Saloon, or get a sarsaparilla from the soda fountain at the General Store.
