Visiting California's High Sierras | Fall 2014

Noted for the scenic Sierra Mountain ranges, California’s High Sierra region is also home to plenty of fun-filled events and festivals visitors and residents continually enjoy. During the fall and winter seasons, travelers can join communities like Lone Pine, Bishop, and South Lake Tahoe as they host a bevy of holiday events and community festivals.

Kicking off autumn, the town of Oakhurst is primed for its annual Oakhurst Fall Festival, taking place October 11th and 12th at the Oakhurst Community Park. Festivalgoers enjoy two days of wine, chocolate, and craft beer samplings, with the day’s activities including arts and crafts, a car show, and plenty of gourmet food vendors.

Coarsegold, just south of Oakhurst, is the site of the 17th annual Tarantula Awareness Festival. While this creepy crawly festival may sound unique, it’s certainly a great place to bring the entire family – take in the festivities October 25th at the Coarsegold Historic Village. The fun begins at 10 a.m.

Motor heads and auto fanatics can get their fix, November 14-16th, at the Central California Auto Show in Fresno. Communities outside of Fresno, including Dinuba, Exeter, and Portersville, make their way to the Fresno Convention Center for three days of classic car displays and shows.

Start the holiday season off right in the town of Mammoth Lakes, where the community comes together for the annual Mammoth Lakes Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony December 5th at the Footloose Sports parking lot. The day’s festivities include hot chocolate, tasty food, sing-a-longs, and an appearance from Santa Claus.

The holiday fun continues in the town of Ridgecrest, found just outside the Sequoia National Forest, when the annual Winter Wonderland celebration brings ice-skating, food vendors, live music, plenty of games, and more on December 4th.
