The Chico Municipal Airport encompasses more than 1,400 acres of land, north of Chico in the North Coast Redwoods area of California. The airport began with a runway and hangar, for general aviation use in the 1930s. Chico Army Airfield was constructed with additional buildings, service roads and runways, for use during World War II. The 10th Army Air Force Base Unit was stationed on the Airfield.
In 1942, the Chico Army Flying School opened for basic training. During the peak usage, approximately 4,000 people were employed at the Airfield and over 5,000 cadets were trained. In 1959, after the Airfield closed, the Air Force used the airport as a missile base. The airport is used for general aviation, as well as for one commercial flight to and from San Francisco. Northgate Aviation, the fixed-base operator, provides pilot instruction, a fuel station, chartered flights and aircraft maintenance.
