Most Popular Area Attractions

Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary

Near downtown Arcata, the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is ideal for an easy outdoor getaway. Part of Humboldt County's innovative waste water management program the wetlands are a wildlife refuge and are on the Pacific Flyway bird migration route. It's a premier outdoor destination in the North Coast Redwoods

With nearly five miles of trails, the Arcata Marsh is a popular destination for hiking, biking, jogging and bird watching. Saturday morning tours are staffed by the Redwood Region Audubon Society. Enjoy a sterling day of hikes, bike rides, bird watching, and fishing on your next visit to Arcata

Arcata/Eureka Airport

When you fly into the North Coast of California area, you'll most likely land at the Arcata/Eureka Airport, just north of Arcata and Eureka. The 745-acre airport was built as a site to test aircraft defogging systems, for the United States Navy, during World War II. The airport supported the Naval Air Station Alameda and was the 12th Naval District's headquarters.

In 1947, a DC-3 for Southwest Airlines used the Ground-Controlling Approach radar and Instrument Landing System, for the first time in the world, to land the aircraft. As the largest airport between Portland, Oregon and San Francisco, it services general aviation, commercial flights and cargo shipments. The commercial airline offers service to Sacramento, Crescent City and San Francisco.

Patrick's Point State Park

Outdoor adventure awaits in California. Patrick's Point State Park is located in California's beautiful north coast redwood region, 25 miles north of Eureka. Visitors to the park hike among the spruce tree forests and through meadows filled with wildflowers. Bring your camera to capture the spectacular views from the top of Ceremonial Rock and Lookout Rock.

The coastal area of the park is a great place to watch sea lions, whales and the tide pools. While in the park, check out the recreated Yurok Indian Village or the Native American Plant Garden, with plants for basketry, medicinal and ceremonial purposes.

Smith River National Recreation Area

Included in the Six Rivers National Forest, the Smith River National Recreation Area along the north coast of California is a premier outdoor destination. The area is along the top border of the Redwood National Park. Visitors to the area enjoy fishing in the Smith River, the "longest National Wild and Scenic River" in the country. Make the short drive in from Eureka.

Known as one of the best fishing areas in America, fishermen love to cast out for steelhead trout, chinook salmon and a variety of other species. During the summer, try rafting or swimming in the river, one of the cleanest in the country. Lace up your hiking boots for enjoyable hikes in the Pacific Coast Ranges in the area, accessible year-round.
