Benicia Capitol State Historic Park

California's third capitol building remains standing at Benicia Capitol State Historic Park. The seat of California's government in 1853-54 before moving to Sacramento. Beautifully restored and maintained with period furnishings, this is a must see for history enthusiasts.

Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve

The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve encompasses over 5,000 acres in the San Francisco Bay area, southeast of Martinez. The land in the preserve produced almost four million tons of coal during the late 1860s, into the early 1900s. There were twelve mines located in the area's five mining towns that became the largest coal-producing mines in the state.

While in this historical area, be sure to visit the Rose Hill Cemetery, where more than 200 people are buried from the area. Visit the preserve for a guided underground tour of the Hazel-Atlas Mine to learn more about mine operations. Go above ground for a wonderful afternoon of hiking on the preserve's sixty miles of trails. John Muir National Historic Park

The John Muir National Historic Park encompasses 325 acres of land near Martinez in the San Francisco Bay area. The park was established in 1964 and preserves the Muir Mansion, built in 1883. John Muir, well-known naturalist and conservationist, lived in the house from 1890, until his death in 1914. Be sure to browse the Museum Collections Exhibit to view the photographs and Muir's personal belongings.

Visit the park today to enjoy a 30-minute, guided or self-guided tour of the first floor of the mansion. Stop by the visitor center to view the biographical film about Muir and to learn more about his life. Schedule your visit for the summer or fall and enjoy a piece of fruit grown in the orchards.
