The Oxnard Airport was first established in 1934, in the heart of Oxnard. The airport's single 3,500 foot dirt runway was used by Howard Hughes in the 1930s, when he flew his H-1 monoplane racer. By 1938, the runway was paved and a hangar was added. In 1939, the Oxnard Flying School was added at the airport. During World War II, the airport was used by the United States Navy as a Naval Air Station.
At the completion of the war, general aviation resumed at the 216-acre airport. The first commercial flights began in 1946 with Southwest Airlines' Douglas DC-3 airplanes. Commercial flights are not currently offered. The airport's two fixed based operators, Aspen Helicopters and Golden West Jet Centers offer general aviation services.
