California's Inland Empire
Interstate 10 travelers know California’s Inland Empire as the gateway into the Los Angeles area, but this season, communities from San Bernardino and Moreno Valley to Rancho Cucamonga and Phelan give road trippers plenty of reason to stay. Special events, festivals, and all sorts of family-friendly fun – this spring is a great time to discover the Inland Empire.
A day of high-octane excitement draws big crowds to the Auto Club Speedway, near Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario, when the 2016 Auto Club 400 revs up on March 20th. Part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the race is an opportunity to see some of racing’s biggest stars in action.
If it’s a more relaxing day of family-friendly fun you’re after, the 2016 Temecula Valley Fair might be just the thing. Held March 18th through 21st at Galway Downs in Temecula, the fair promises all the staples families know and love – from midway rides and games, to agricultural exhibitions and competitions, live entertainment, fried food, and more.
The sky over Temecula fills with color on May 20th – and so do tongues and teeth. Gather with residents at Lake Skinner County Park for the 2016 Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival. It’s chance to taste of some fine reds and whites, as blue flames lift the contraptions high, creating a truly stunning backdrop to sip by as the sun sets. Pours start at 3 p.m.
Theatre buffs visiting San Bernardino won’t want to miss the chance to see a live performance of one of the genre’s most classic tales. The California Theatre of the Performing Arts hosts a production of Into the Woods, with 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows on June 11th.
To the north, the community of Big Bear Lake is a go-to getaway for inhabitants of the Inland Empire and the LA area alike. June 3rd through 5th, the Big Bear Convention Center is filled with a wide range of minerals, fossils, and gems as part of the 2016 Big Bear Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show. Buy, trade, sell, or just admire – things get started at 10 a.m. each day.
