Visiting Los Angeles Metro Area

A Los Angeles getaway in summer certainly includes a visit to a few of California’s beaches. Long Beach, Redondo Beach and Santa Monica at the top of the list, offer idyllic California beach experiences. Have Lunch in Santa Monica at the Annenberg Community Beach House, kids love the rides and games on the Pier, or surf, swim and sunbathe. Explore the underwater wonders of the Pacific Ocean at Long Beach's Aquarium of the Pacific, or join the local Redondo Beach community for a competitive game of beach volleyball. Southern California beaches are a must on a summer visit, but they're just the beginning of fun in Los Angeles.

Pull yourself away from the beach; Los Angeles is full of events and festivities. The world’s largest lobster festival takes place in San Pedro, north of Long Beach and west of Wilmington. The 2012 Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival and Music weekend, is September, 14th through the 16th. Fresh Maine Lobster is flown in daily for the festival held at Ports O’ Call at the end of the Interstate 110 Harbor Freeway. Enjoy fresh lobster, parades, live performers and music, as well as tall ships and a pirate camp – well worth a weekend away from the beach!

Get away from the crowds at popular Los Angeles beaches, and head north of Mailbu. Point Dume State Park is 18-miles from Santa Monica at the end of Westward Beach Road. Point Dume Beach is operated by Los Angeles County and offers visitors scenic views of Santa Monica Bay and the north Malibu Coast, as well as rocky coves, nice beaches and fascinating tide pools.

Visitors to northern Los Angles County cities of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo and Oxnard find Leo Carrillo State Beach convenient. On the coast of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Leo Carrillo offers a 1.5-mile sandy beach along with a rocky coastline with excellent tide pools and fun beachcombing. Popular with locals, Leo Carrillo State Beach is about as uncrowded as you’ll find in the Los Angles area.

At the southern end of Los Angeles County visitors find the quintessential California beaches of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, all west of the community of Torrance. Get away from the summer scene south on the Palos Verde peninsula, at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park. Both Abalone Cove Beach and Sacred Cove beaches line the coast of the park offering the area's best views of Catalina Island. You will find a diversity of sea creatures filling the tide pools, however the area is a California State Ecological Preserve, so the kids will have to leave without the hermit crabs.
