Mendocino County’s Wine Country
Nearly 50 Wineries in Mendocino’s Valleys
Stretched along the northern coast of California, Mendocino County is located beyond the San Francisco Bay area, and is the northern point of California’s Wine Country. Mendocino County encompasses cities like Willits, Fort Bragg, and the county seat, Ukiah – and is set just north of Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties.
Mendocino County is home to nearly 50 wineries, all spread across three regions in the area: Anderson Valley, Redwood Valley, and the town of Hopland. Anderson Valley runs 15 miles in length, and yields great Gewürztraminer, pinot noir, chardonnay, and white Rieslings. May brings the Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Festival to wine lovers in the area, while the Wine Tasting Championships are held in nearby Boonville.
Redwood Valley is known for its chardonnays, zinfandels, and merlots, while Hopland features excellent cabernets and petite Syrah. Travelers are encouraged to visit wineries like Elizabeth Vineyards, Silversmith Vineyards, and the McNab Ridge Winery.
Plan out your next wine-tasting trek and head for Mendocino County. The aforementioned McNab Ridge Winery is an ideal destination. You'll find the McNab Ridge Winery Tasting Room in Hopland, just off of Redwood Highway Road – taste your favorite reds and whites. The Silversmith Vineyards is another top producer of fine wines in the region. Family owned and operated, and featuring a charming, pet-friendly tasting room, the Silversmith Vineyards continually prove to be an exemplary choice for wine in Mendocino County.
Closer to the coast in the city of Elk, discover the Drew Family Cellars. Another family owned and operated winery, the Drew Family Cellars specialize in Pinot Noir, with nine different clones, like the Pommard, Calera, and Swan. The nearby Goldeneye Winery is a spectacular choice for wine fans in Mendocino County – visit soon and experience their Alfresco Picnic Lunch or the ever-popular Estate Tasting Tour.
You'll want to stick around in nearby Philo and experience the bounties at Lazy Creek Vineyards. With a Tasting Room open from Thursday through Monday, Lazy Creek Vineyards is the ideal place for any quick, weekend trip. Be sure to enjoy their 2012 Lazy Creek Vineyards Gewurtztraminer.
Before the conclusion of your Mendocino County wine-tasting adventure, plan a tour and tasting at the Seebass Vineyards in Ukiah. Producing wines since the 1980s, Seebass Vineyards features prime examples of the high-quality wines of the region – be sure to try their 2011 Syrah, which one Silver at the 2011 Mendocino County Wine Competition.
