Visitors Cruise California's North Coast | Late Summer 2014

There’s no better time of the year for an enchanting drive along California’s north coast via highways 1 and 101. Santa Rosa, just an hour north of San Francisco and the Bay Area, makes a great place to start an unforgettable tour. Stop and see a show while you’re in town – the Well Fargo Center for the Arts features a range of performances, from theatre productions to stand-up shows by well-known comedians like Cheech and Chong on September 26th and Nick Offerman on October 3rd.

Eureka, north of Fortuna and south of Arcata, welcomes visitors to bask in perfect weather while strolling through the art galleries and antique shops of its Old Town Eureka area. Make sure to check out the art deco offerings of boutiques like Annex 39 and the Native art, jewelry, and basketry of retailers like American Indian Art & Gift Shop.

Take advantage of this season’s temperatures as they invite the animals at Eureka’s Sequoia Park Zoo out to say hello to visiting families. Now’s the time to pay a visit to rare species, including Red pandas before the chilly weather returns, which makes most animals want to stay under cover and out of the limelight. Animal lovers of all ages won’t want to miss International Red Panda Day on September 28th and the annual Boo at the Zoo is always a hit. This year’s “frightfully delightful” family event takes place on October 25th, shedding light on the zoo’s darker creatures, like bats, spiders, and snakes, through interactive games and activities.

Continue heading north on the 101 to reach the renowned Redwood National Park, home to some of the world’s tallest trees. This is the season to explore this one-of-a-kind slice of nature – lucky visitors spot Stellar’s sea lions, Bald eagles, and North American spotted owls, throughout the park’s coastline, forests, rivers and streams.

After emerging from the redwoods, venture further north to reach Crescent City. If you’re hungry for more outdoor adventure, the clean and clear water of the Smith River National Recreation Area is the right temperature for rafting and swimming and the surrounding Pacific Coast Ranges are ideal for a hike.

Crescent City calls classic car enthusiasts to Beachfront Park, the weekend of October 10th and 11th, for the 2014 Sea Cruise Car Show. The night before the cars line up at the park Show ‘n’ Shine takes over the downtown area, filling it with live music, marketplace vendors. Then, don’t miss a chance to scoot your boots at the Sea Cruise Dance on Saturday night at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.
