Visiting Sacramento & California's Gold Country

California consistently proves to be one of the most diverse and popular travel destinations across the country. Few places fully embody that sentiment quite like Sacramento and its surrounding Gold Country region – especially during summer.

With thousands of acres to explore across national forests just to the east, and a bevy of unique and fun events and festivals closer to town, your visit to Sacramento is sure to be pleasant and memorable.

Summer in Sacramento will yield some of the best experiences of the year. From July 8th to the 24th, be sure to checkout the California State Fair. Make your way to the California State Fairgrounds, just east of downtown Sacramento between Exposition Boulevard and the American River. For 17 days, this site hosts all your favorite fair festivities and carnival-style games and rides. Make the drive in from nearby Dixon and Woodland.

When your visit to the Gold Country of California is slated for late August, be sure to experience some of the best wines and cheeses – some locally crafted, and others from top makers across the U.S. August 27th and 28th, head for the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg – just to the south of downtown Sacramento – for this annual cheese and wine tasting.

Few destinations this summer will yield the kind of outdoor fun quite like Lake Tahoe. From Sacramento you’ll cruise along Highway 50 through Placerville and Pollock Pines on your way to Lake Tahoe. You can stay in the bordering South Lake Tahoe – on August 13th, you’ll be treated to a live performance from the legendary Lionel Richie at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena.

Make sure you carve out some time to explore the charming city of Angels Camp. Bring your running shoes and head for Utica Park near downtown Angels Camp – September 25th it hosts the 5K/10K Gold Run, featuring games, music, and a chicken or spaghetti lunch for only $10. You can make the quick drive in from nearby Sonora.

The Mark Twain Festival takes place just a few weeks later in Angels Camp on October 15th. Once known as Gold Rush Day, this one-day event celebrates Twain’s visit to Angels Camp when he wrote “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” There’s a parade, a look-a-like contest, and plenty of live music and excellent food.
