Visiting Sacramento & California Gold Country
California’s capital region is in season! Woodland, 20-miles northwest of Sacramento hosts the 2012 Yolo County Fair. Sacramento is in high anticipation for the 13th Annual Gold Rush Days, while San Joaquin County gears up for the Lodi Grape Festival. Outdoor fun abounds, from a baseball game in the city at Raley Field, to marathons and adventures in Lake Tahoe. California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains are prime for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife spotting. With kids back in school, take advantage of the season for a visit to Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe or your favorite scenic California outdoor playground.
Woodland celebrates the best of the capital region’s livestock and agriculture at the 2012 Yolo County Fair. The fair runs August 15th through 19th, at the Yolo County Fairgrounds. The fair is the oldest free gate fair in California, featuring the Destruction Derby, Livestock and agriculture exhibits and two stages with live entertainment, as well as the carnival rides and games. It is time for Sheep Thrills & Muddy Wheels at the Yolo County Fair.
Celebrate Sacramento’s heritage over Labor Day weekend, at the 13th Annual Gold Rush Days. Visit Old Sacramento for the 2012 festivities August 31st through September 3rd. Get ready to take a step back in time, with the streets topped in dirt, and performers and entertainers in period costumes. Enjoy wagon rides, panning for gold, dancers and street drama, just as if you were in Sacramento if the 1850’s. See Pony Express riders, parades and live entertainment at Sacramento’s Gold Rush Days.
While visiting the city, sports fans be sure to enjoy a Sacramento River Cats game before the 2012 end of season home game, on August 26th. A day at Raley Field with family and friends is always good. Come to the ballpark and see the up-and-coming stars of the Oakland A’s.
San Joaquin Country celebrates its agriculture at the Lodi Grape Festival, mid-September. The 2012 Grape Festival runs September 13th through the 16th, featuring three stages for live entertainment, the General Mills Kidzone and an eco-venture entertainment area. Exhibits feature table grapes, red wine grapes, white wine grapes and grape murals, along with floriculture, scarecrow and agriculture showcases. Top it all off with carnival games and rides and it is family fun in Lodi at the Lodi Grape Festival.
Winters, 15-miles west of Davis, celebrates its Hispanic culture at the Festival de la Comunidad, September 29th. The 2012 festival brings families and friends together at the Winters Community Center for live music, dancing and the popular carnitas cook-off. A great welcome to fall with food and fun in Winters.
Fall in Lake Tahoe is ideal for an outdoor challenge, and the 2012 Lake Tahoe Marathon Week offers a challenge for everyone. From September 28th through the 30th, runners, cyclists and extreme athletes challenge themselves at the Emerald Bay Marathon, Cal-Neva Marathon, and the Tahoe 72. Additional events include half marathons, kayaking and swimming in Lake Tahoe, and cycling the 72 miles around the Lake. Race for the finish line or join runners in South Lake Tahoe for a scenic weekend in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
