Visiting San Diego Metropolitan Area

San Diego’s summer calendar winds down as back to school time approaches. The Del Mar racing season soon closes – where the Turf meets the surf, the Del Mar Racetrack, holds its last scheduled race September 5th, followed by the closing Party in the Paddock. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego closes the exhibit "Santa Ana Condition: John Valadez" on September 2nd, and at the San Diego Natural History Museum "TITANIC, The Artifact Exhibition" ends its run on September 9th. It is time to make that last getaway to Southern California and San Diego to enjoy your favorite destinations and events.

In northern San Diego County, Legoland is a must for traveling families. Visit through Labor Day weekend and enjoy Legoland Water Park, Sea Life Aquarium and Legoland. After September’s holiday, visiting hours are reduced with the water park open only on weekends. Easy to find, Legoland is in Carlsbad, 30 miles north of San Diego off Interstate 5.

Baseball or Football? No worries, sports fans visiting San Diego in September, can see regular season games for MLB’s San Diego Padres and the NFL’s San Diego Chargers. Catch the end of the Padres 2012 season at PETCO Park through the end of September. Located in downtown San Diego, it’s hard to beat America’s favorite pastime at PETCO Park with the scenic views of the skyline.

After two home preseason games, the Chargers open 2012 regular season home play, September 16th hosting the Tennessee Titans. Cheer on the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium north of downtown off Interstate 15 in Mission Valley. The Chargers play eight home games through the season.

San Diego’s weather makes it easy to get outside for some exercise. A variety of events let you test your training and enjoy southern California’s great outdoors. Unfortunately, the 12th Annual Dare To Soar, Fall Run & Walk across the Coronado Bay Bridge has been cancelled, however there are plenty of San Diego area running events to join.

The 2012 Heartbreak Ridge Half Marathon and 1K Kids Race, hosted by Camp Pendleton Races, is Saturday, September 8th. Hit the 13.1-mile course through the 43 area Las Pulgas at Camp Pendleton. The out-and-back course is off-road along packed fire roads.

October races include the San Diego Dirt Devils Raptor Ridge Half Marathon. Scheduled October 14th, Raptor Ridge starts and finishes at San Dieguito River Park in Escondido. The out-n-back course features challenging trails up and over Raptor Ridge and again on the way back. If you enjoy trail running, this is your race.

Ladies have two special fall events especially for women. She Runs hosts the San Diego Women’s Only 5k and ½ Marathon races September 15th, as part of their San Diego retreat. The courses are out-n-back along trails near Lake Hodges south of Escondido and north of Poway. USA Women’s San Diego Half Marathon is September 22nd. If there’s a man in the family, bring him along, men are always welcome to participate.
