Visiting San Diego Metropolitan Area
With southern California’s beautiful year-round weather, challenges for runners and triathletes are throughout the year. October in San Diego features two popular Triathlons the same weekend. The 2012 Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge and the 2012 Toyota SheROX San Diego Triathlon, are Sunday, October 21st. La Jolla hosts the San Diego Triathlon Challenge, with the start, transitions and finish at picturesque La Jolla Cove at Scripps, Ellen Browning Park. The SheROX San Diego Triathlon takes place at Mission Bay Park. SheROX San Diego features a sprint course and super sprint distance course. San Diego’s fall weather is ideal for a challenge.
San Diego Outdoor Outreach collaborates with the southern California community, to host the 2012 Lake Hodges Trail Fest. Events are geared for all levels of experience, and include the extreme Lake Hodges 50K, Hunt for Hodgee 15K, Hunt for Hodgee 5K, and the Kid’s 1-Mile Hodgee Hunt. Events are October 28th – keep your eyes peeled for a Hodgee sighting.
San Diego County’s community of El Cajon welcomes fall with September’s Cajon Classic Cruise ending with Thunder on Main, the last Wednesday of the month. October brings HauntFest on Main 2012, to downtown El Cajon. With three stages and 16 bands, Friday, October 26th is the night to celebrate Halloween in El Cajon. Along with live music, the downtown El Cajon Promenade District HauntFest features food trucks, carnival rides, and trunk or treat for the kids.
Santee, 5-miles north of El Cajon, is home to San Diego County’s Carlton Oaks Golf Course. The course is the only public Dye designed golf course in the San Diego area. In operation for over 50 years, Carlton Oaks features spectacular landscape with abundant mature trees and lakes.
Just seven-miles north of Southern California’s border with Mexico, Chula Vista is home to one of the few US Olympic Training centers. The 155-acre CVOTC complex, located next to San Diego County’s Lower Otay Reservoir, operates year-round hosting thousands of Olympic hopefuls. The Olympic Training Center is open Monday through Saturday for visitors. Check in at the Visitors Center for a guided tour or self-guided tour map.
Chula Vista is also home to the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre and Knott’s Soak City, next door to each other. Unfortunately, it is fall, and Knott’s Soak City Water Park San Diego closes for the 2012 season at the end of September. The Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre has performances scheduled through October, including Brad Paisley and Florence and the Machine. Just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego, the Chula Vista Amphitheatre is an easy destination to find.
