Sonoma County’s Wine Country
Exploring Sonoma’s 250 Wineries
Set just north of the San Francisco Bay area, Sonoma County is the largest county within California’s Wine Country. Neighboring Napa County, Sonoma is home to 13 American Viticulture Areas, and more than 250 notable wineries including B. R. Cohn Winery, Gloria Ferrer, and Charles Creek Vineyard.
Opened 1984, the B.R. Cohn Winery is a short drive from Rohnert Park, and was founded by Bruce Cohn, former band manager of rock band The Doobie Brothers. Enjoy a fine, if not quaint, selection of chardonnay and malbec when you embark on a tasting and tour.
At the Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards, you'll experience a premier wine-tasting endeavor. The Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards is known to be the very first sparking wine house in the Sonoma area. Drive in from nearby Petaluma and check out the Food & Wine Pairing Tour.
Continue the Sonoma County wine-tasting adventure with a visit to the Alexander Valley Vineyards in Healdsburg, the Balleto Vineyards in Santa Rosa, and the Flowers Vineyards & Winery in Cazadero. Many other Sonoma wine fans head for the Francis For Coppola Winery in Geyserville, one of the most popular wineries in the region.
Sonoma County yields renowned chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and pinot noir from its 60,000 acres of vineyards. These blends hail from the many AVAs in Sonoma County, including Alexander Valley AVA near Cloverdale, Rockpile AVA near Healdsburg, and Sonoma Valley AVA near Sonoma.
Northern California cities found in Sonoma County include Petaluma, Rohnert Park, and the county seat, Santa Rosa. Visitors are encouraged to tour the many vineyards of Sonoma County, and look into the many wine tasting opportunities in the area.
