Northern California’s Wine Country
Napa, Sonoma, Lake, & Mendocino Counties
California has stunning beaches, bustling cities, and famed theme parks, but one other thing drawing in the crowds is California Wine Country. Northern California is home to over 400 wineries, and consists of four counties – all just north of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The most famous of these counties is Napa County, encompassing the Napa Valley American Viticultural Area, and well-known wineries such as Robert Mondavi, Charles Krug Winery, and Chateau Montelena. Visitors of Napa and Calistoga are encouraged to try wine tastings, tour vineyards, and bring home a bottle or two from Napa County.
Extend your Napa wine tour at the Baldacci Family Vineyards, a short drive from Fairfield. Many Napa explorers enjoy a ride on the Napa Valley Winey Train. A pleasant 36-mile, round trip train ride takes you through the gorgeous scenery of the Napa area.
The largest of the Wine Country counties is Sonoma County, home to Sonoma, Petaluma, Rohnert Park, Cloverdale, and the county seat, Santa Rosa. Sonoma County consists of 13 AVAs, and features more than 250 wineries within its boundaries.
There top destinations throughout Sonoma County and the North Coast. Head for the Flowers Vineyards & Winery in Cazadero, the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, and you cannot miss out on the Alexander Valley Vineyards in Healdsburg.
The remaining wine counties are Lake County and Mendocino County, where cities like Clearlake, Ukiah, and Willits can be found. The Ployez Winery is ideal when you're planning a visit to Lake County. The Lazy Creek Vineyards is the perfect place to sample some fine reds and whites in Mendocino County.
Journey through California’s Wine Country for an incredibly scenic experience through the vineyards, and easily find a Best Western hotel nearby.
